FAQs

The Louis Philippe style emerged in France during the mid-19th century, characterised by clean, understated lines, gentle curves, and rounded upper corners, often serving as a more restrained evolution from earlier ornate periods.

Authentic period pieces are constructed from wood, typically pine or fruitwood, featuring applied gesso and gold leaf or gilt finishes, alongside mercury glass or early hand-silvered mirror plates.

Authenticity is determined by examining the construction joints, the presence of traditional hand-applied gesso, the ageing characteristics of the gilt surface, and the imperfections or oxidisation visible within the mirror plate.

Pairing an ornate or classically proportioned gilt mirror with minimalist contemporary furniture creates a balanced focal point, reflecting light and adding depth to living rooms, hallways, or above a fireplace.

Gilded frames require gentle dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding any liquid cleaners, abrasive materials, or direct sunlight to prevent damage to the delicate gold leaf and historical finish.
