Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A decanter box, often called a spirit chest or tantalus, is a fitted wooden container designed to securely store and transport glass decanters and glasses, historically used in wealthy households to safeguard expensive spirits from unauthorized access by staff.

These boxes are typically crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, frequently featuring decorative veneers like burr walnut, and are internally fitted with velvet, silk, or baize linings alongside brass hardware, locks, and corner mounts.

Authenticity is determined by examining the joinery, the type of lock mechanism and brass fittings, the presence of hand-blown or lead-cut crystal decanters matching the interior compartments, and natural ageing characteristics such as timber shrinkage and oxidation on the metal components.

This item functions effectively as an accent piece on a sideboard, home bar, or office credenza, blending period craftsmanship with functional storage for modern entertaining.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations, periodically applying a suitable microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood, and hand-washing the crystal glassware with lukewarm water.
