A table snuff box is a lidded container designed to hold powdered tobacco, known as snuff, which was extremely popular for personal use during the 18th and 19th centuries. These boxes were typically kept on surfaces in reception rooms or offices for easy access by hosts and guests.

These decorative items were typically constructed from various native and exotic woods using precise marquetry and parquetry techniques. Artisans carefully cut and fitted small veneers of timber, such as mahogany, walnut, and fruitwoods, to create optical geometric illusions like tumbling block patterns.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit natural wear patterns, the use of older hand-cut veneers, and traditional construction methods such as dovetail joints or hand-cut hinges. Examining the underside and interior surfaces often reveals the natural ageing, oxidisation, and patination expected from centuries of handling.

An antique wooden box functions effectively as a decorative accent piece on a coffee table, bookshelf, or mantelpiece. It provides subtle texture and historical contrast while serving as a practical container for small contemporary items.

Antique treen and inlaid wooden objects should be kept away from direct sunlight and extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity to prevent wood splitting and veneer lifting. Occasional application of microcrystalline wax helps protect the surface without harming the historic patina.
