We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

FAQs

Gilt mirrors gained prominence in European interior design during the 17th and 18th centuries, often reflecting neoclassical and baroque design influences where gold leaf was applied to carved wooden frames to project status and enhance light.

Authentic period pieces typically feature hand-carved wooden framesoften utilising softwoods or pinecoated in a layer of gesso, water-gilded with genuine gold leaf, and fitted with hand-silvered or mercury glass plates.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the reverse for hand-adzed wood, examining the glass for oxidisation spots and waviness, and checking the gesso layer for age-related micro-cracking and natural wear patterns.

Gilt mirrors provide a striking contrast when paired with minimalist, modern furniture, acting as a focal point above a simple console table, modern fireplace, or clean-lined sideboard to introduce warmth and texture.

Gilt surfaces are extremely fragile and should only be dusted gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster, avoiding all chemical cleaners, water, and abrasive cloths that can strip the delicate gold leaf.
