Convex mirrors, often known as optical or bankers mirrors, gained significant popularity in Europe during the 15th and 19th centuries. They were traditionally designed to provide a wide field of view in a room and were frequently utilised in drawing rooms and offices.

These frames are typically constructed from carved wood, composition material, or plaster over a wooden armature, finished with gold leaf or gilt paint. The glass itself is blown or curved to create the signature bulging reflective surface.

Authentic period pieces often feature hand-carved wooden elements, traditional gesso application, mercury backing on the older glass plates, and aged fixings on the reverse. Examining the depth of the rebate and the oxidation of the gilt finish helps determine age.

A convex mirror works effectively as a focal point on a plain wall, reflecting light and adding depth to smaller spaces. It contrasts well against minimalist modern backdrops or adds historical weight to a curated gallery wall.

Keep the mirror out of direct sunlight to prevent degradation of the gilt finish and backing. Clean the glass sparingly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can damage the antique silvering or frame.
