Chinoiserie is a European interpretation and imitation of Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions, which gained immense popularity during the 17th and 18th centuries and saw revivals in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

These pieces generally utilise a hardwood base finished with layers of dark lacquer, often decorated with hand-painted motifs in gold or polychrome metallic pigments, frequently depicting oriental landscapes, figures, and flora.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-applied lacquer work for natural ageing, craquelure, and wear patterns, alongside traditional joinery techniques appropriate to the stated historical period.

Such a statement piece functions effectively as a standalone accent chair in a living room, study, or bedroom, pairing well with neutral backdrops that allow the intricate painted details to stand out.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent the lacquer from cracking, cleaning only with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding chemical polishes.
