Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

French gilt mirrors are characterised by ornate carved wooden frames covered in thin gold leaf, reflecting classical motifs and opulent aesthetics popular in historical French interior design.

Authentic period pieces typically feature hand-carved wood bases, gesso layers, applied gold leaf or metal gilt, and historical glass plates with bevelled edges.

Authentication involves examining the construction of the wooden frame behind, checking for hand-carved details rather than cast resin, observing natural oxidisation on the mercury or silvered glass, and noting traditional gesso application.

Placing an ornate gilt mirror in a contemporary setting creates a striking focal point, often hung above a fireplace or styled to contrast minimalist furniture with classical texture.

Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry brush to avoid damaging the delicate gold leaf, and use a minimal amount of glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror plate.
