Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Nineteenth-century gilt mirrors typically feature carved wooden frames coated in thin gold leaf or gesso, reflecting the neoclassical, regency, or Victorian design aesthetics of the period.

Authentic pieces are generally constructed from softwoods such as pine or hardwood bases, layered with gesso, hand-gilded with gold leaf, and fitted with hand-silvered glass plates.

Authenticity is indicated by foxing or oxidisation on the mirror glass, hand-cut joinery in the wooden frame, traditional gesso application, and signs of age-appropriate wear beneath the gilt surface.

Placing a large antique mirror above a modern minimalist sideboard or fireplace creates a striking focal point, contrasting historical craftsmanship with clean, contemporary lines.

Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid all moisture, chemical solvents, or commercial cleaning sprays, as these can permanently damage the fragile gold leaf or gesso.
