Description

Very decorative pair of satin birch Biedermeier style open armchairs, circa 1920.

Fabulous shape with the tub style back rail.

The satin birch contrasting well with the black highlights to the carvings and mouldings.

Really super pair of armchairs, a good size and comfortable with them being recently upholstered.

Good solid condition and although the upholstery isn’t new, it is in good condition, some slight scarring to the rear of one of the chairs back rails. No problem if you would rather have them reupholstered obviously!

The Biedermeier style originated in Central Europe between 1815 and 1848, focusing on utilitarianism, clean lines, and domestic comfort over excessive ornamentation.

Makers typically employed native European woods such as cherry, ash, oak, and birch veneer, often accented with dark ebonised details and traditional joinery.

Authentic pieces feature restrained neoclassical forms, minimal carving replaced by striking wood grain, and functional, sturdy construction typical of the early 19th century.

Pair these chairs with neutral walls, minimalist lighting, and contemporary textiles to highlight their architectural lines and warm timber tones.

Maintain the finish by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity, and occasionally treat the timber with a quality microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood.
