French Provincial furniture originated in the 17th and 18th centuries in regions outside Paris, where local craftsmen adapted sophisticated Parisian styles into simpler, more functional country designs using regional timbers.

These chairs were traditionally constructed from regional hardwoods such as fruitwood, oak, or beech, featuring woven seats made from natural marsh rush or straw.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon, hand-turned components, natural wear patterns on the wood, and hand-woven rush seats displaying slight irregularities.

Pair these armchairs with clean-lined modern tables or place them as accent seating in a living room to introduce textural contrast and historical character.

Maintain the wood with appropriate wax or polish, protect the woven rush from excessive moisture and direct sunlight, and avoid placing them in overly dry environments that can make the straw brittle.
