This 19th-century Chippendale style mahogany library armchair comes in a Georgian Revival design. The dark wood timber complements the patterned crimson red silk damask upholstery covering the sprung back and seat. The serpentine-shaped top leads to open arms with scroll-carved ends and carved arm supports. Below the seat, a carved Vitruvian scroll frieze joins cabriole legs decorated with tied ribbon and claw and ball feet. The piece stands 95.5 cm high, 69 cm wide and 69 cm deep, with a seat height of 48 cm. Place this chair in a traditional gentleman's library, study or living room for comfortable seating by a desk or fireplace. The sturdy construction and classic silhouette allow it to blend seamlessly with existing antique or traditional interior schemes while offering practical daily use as a reading chair.

A Gainsborough chair, also known as a broad glass chair or library chair, is a type of wide, deep open armchair developed in 18th-century Britain, featuring a tall upholstered back, open carved arms, and exposed timber legs.

These chairs were primarily constructed with solid mahogany or walnut frames, joined using traditional mortise and tenon techniques, and upholstered in woven fabrics such as silk damask, velvet, or natural leather.

Authentic pieces feature crisp hand-carved decorations on the knee and arm supports, period-correct joinery underneath the frame, and traditional upholstery foundations such as horsehair padding and hand-tied springs.

A Gainsborough chair functions effectively as a focal accent chair in a study, reading nook, or living space, pairing well alongside minimalist side tables or neutral contemporary upholstery.

Maintain the timber frame by dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and applying natural beeswax polish annually along the grain, while keeping textile upholstery out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
