FAQs

Novelty snuff boxes shaped like coffins emerged in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, often associated with the memento mori tradition which served as a reminder of mortality. They were crafted by woodworkers and folk artists as functional personal tobacco containers with distinct symbolic shapes.

Treen snuff boxes were carved from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, walnut, or fruitwood. Decorative elements frequently incorporated inlay materials including bone, mother-of-pearl, tortoise shell, or contrasting woods.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-carving, period-correct pin mechanisms for pivoting lids, and natural wear or patination around edges and joints. Internal surfaces often show subtle discolouration or faint aromas from historical tobacco storage.

Small treen items are effectively styled as accent objects on bookshelves, placed within glass display cloches, or arranged alongside brass desk accessories and antique leather-bound books.

Keep wooden treen in climate-controlled conditions away from direct heat sources and excessive humidity to prevent wood shrinkage and inlay detachment. Apply a light coat of natural microcrystalline wax periodically using a soft cloth to protect the surface finish.
