Marquetry work boxes gained immense popularity during the 19th century as portable receptacles used by women for sewing, embroidery, and correspondence, often featuring intricate wood veneers.

These pieces were typically constructed from a secondary timber base, heavily veneered in exotic woods such as rosewood, mahogany, or satinwood, and embellished with brass handles, escutcheons, and bone inlay.

Authentic pieces generally display period-appropriate hand-cut dovetail joints, old brass hardware with natural oxidisation, hand-carved feet, and traditional paper or velvet linings inside the compartments.

Such objects can be placed on a console table, desk, or bookcase as a functional decorative accent to store small items while adding texture and historical character to a room.

Keep wooden items away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to nourish the grain without damaging the delicate veneer.
