This nineteenth-century French Louis Philippe style overmantle wall mirror is constructed from wood and gesso with a silver leaf gilt finish in silver. The rectangular glass plate features rounded upper corners, an inner beaded border, and a ribbed outer frame moulding with a textured surface, displaying minor losses, knocks, marks, wear, imperfections, repairs, alterations, refinishing, touching up, and historic treated woodworm holes alongside original mirrored glass with light to medium oxidation and age-related imperfections. Overall maximum dimensions are 117 cm high by 90 cm wide by 6 cm deep, with the mirrored glass measuring 93 cm high by 65 cm wide. Positioned above a mantel in a home today, this piece functions as a large decorative wall mirror. The solid frame construction has no loose joints, providing a stable hanging structure for interior living spaces.

Originating in France during the reign of King Louis Philippe in the mid-19th century, these mirrors are characterised by rounded top corners, clean lines, and subtle decorative mouldings such as beadwork or fluting.

Frames were typically constructed from pine or oak overlaid with gesso moulding, then gilded using gold or silver leaf over a coloured clay bole base. Mirror plates were made using silvered glass.

Authentic period pieces often show subtle wear to the silver leaf revealing the underlying red or grey clay bole, gentle oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate, and hand-carved wood backboards.

Positioning a silver gilt mirror above a fireplace or modern sideboard creates a focal point that reflects natural light, complementing both contemporary monochrome palettes and traditional period schemes.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a dry, soft feather duster or soft brush, avoiding liquids or chemical cleaners that can dissolve water-gilded gesso surfaces. Clean the glass carefully with a slightly damp cloth without touching the frame.
