This is an exceptionally good quality antique English Victorian bedroom chair, constructed of rosewood, with the finest quality carvings, also known as a “prayer” or “prie dieu” chair, upholstered in plush taupe velvet, circa 1860, in good original condition.
Below sits a firm but comfortable upholstered seat, finished with matching braiding around the perimeter of the seat and also the backrest. The underside of the seat has been webbed and lined with hessian. The Victorian bedroom chair frieze is finely carved with scroll detail and stands on carved cabriole legs all round, terminating on its original brass castors. This is one of the finest quality prayer chairs we have ever come across. Such chairs were historically used in high catholic families. Today, the high back design of this prayer chair makes it an ideal for use as an occasional chair in the bedroom or nursery, as they are extremely comfortable to sit on, or hang clothes from.

Upholstered in plush taupe velvet – the upholstery is clean and the seat is firm yet comfortable. The seat is webbed, with a hessian underside. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the rosewood frame but nothing significant considering its age. The Victorian bedroom chair frame has been cleaned and French polished by hand to a professional standard in our workshop, therefore the colour and patination is of an excellent standard. The Victorian bedroom chair is solid in joint and ready to be used.
