Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large nineteenth-century wall mirror follows a Baroque style, constructed from carved wood finished with gesso and gold leaf to create an aged gold appearance. The heavily decorated frame contains an oval aperture surrounded by intricate hand-carved acanthus leaves, pronounced C-scrolls, and prominent volutes, culminating in a decorative crest at the top and symmetrical scrolls at the base. Visible signs of age include scattered small surface losses to the gesso and a distressed patina throughout the gilded finish. Specific visual elements include raised scroll moulding along the inner border, a textured hatched pattern on the bottom pendant, and deep relief carvings framing the central void. Measuring 112 cm high by 76 cm wide and 5 cm deep, the frame stands out as a substantial decorative item. In a contemporary home, this mirror works effectively positioned above a mantelpiece in a living room, drawing inspiration from French chateau aesthetics. It suits placement in an entrance hall or dining room where a dramatic country house look is desired. The wall-mounted piece functions as a striking focal point, reflecting light and adding architectural interest to traditional or transitional interior spaces without requiring additional ornamentation.

FAQs

Baroque style frames are defined by dramatic, high-relief carving, flowing scrollwork, architectural motifs, and symmetrical or fluid organic forms such as acanthus leaves and volutes.

Traditional construction involved hand-carved timber, often pine or lime, coated with layers of chalk-based gesso, smoothed, and finished with gold leaf applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-carving marks on the reverse, natural wear to the gold leaf exposing red or grey bole clay underneath, age-related cracking in the gesso, and dark oxidisation.

A Baroque mirror is frequently used as a focal statement piece hung above a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table, contrasting ornate carved detailing against minimalist wall surfaces.

Gilded surfaces should be dusted gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners, water, or commercial polishes which can dissolve gesso and strip gold leaf.
