This large wall mirror belongs to the 20th century Italian Rococo Revival style, standing at 122 cm by 72 cm. The piece consists of a carved wood and gesso frame with silver and gold leaf finishes, glass, and detailed floral accents. The arched top houses an ornate acanthus leaf cresting and scrolled frame decorations. The surface shows a weathered, antiqued texture with visible distressing to the gilt and silver leaf layers. Four prominent corner scrolls anchor the structure, complemented by distinct floral rosettes placed along the vertical side pieces. Today, this mirror works well positioned above a mantelpiece in a living room, drawing room, or hallway. The reflective glass creates a sense of space while the ornate metallic frame adds traditional character to interior walls. The neutral silver and gold tones coordinate with a range of existing colour schemes, serving as a decorative focal point in both contemporary and classic residential settings.

FAQs

This style draws inspiration from 18th-century Rococo design, featuring sweeping curves, asymmetric acanthus scrollwork, floral motifs, and detailed gilding or silvering on carved timber.

Frames are crafted from carved wood, coated with gesso layers, and finished with gold or silver leafing before mounting reflective mirrored glass.

Examine the rear joinery of the timber frame, check for slight leaf overlap or natural oxidisation, and verify hand-carved details beneath the gesso surface.

Mount the mirror above a mantelpiece, place it above a hallway console table, or hang it against a neutral backdrop to serve as an architectural focal point.

Dust the ornate frame lightly with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals and abrasives that strip gold or silver leaf finish.
