FAQs

Coromandel wood, prized for its rich grain and dark colour, was frequently used during the 19th century in Britain to craft luxury items such as games boxes, writing slopes, and tea caddies for affluent households.

Master artisans utilised dense exotic hardwoods like coromandel, often combining them with intricate geometric parquetry or marquetry using contrasting timbers such as satinwood, boxwood, and walnut to create a three-dimensional optical effect.

Authenticity is typically determined by examining the hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional hand-beaten brass or steel hardware, irregular paper linings, and the natural ageing and oxidisation of the timber grain.

Placed upon a surface such as a side table or mantelpiece, this piece adds textural warmth and historical contrast, serving as a sophisticated focal point in contemporary minimalist or traditional schemes.

To maintain the finish, keep the box away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity sources, dusting periodically with a dry microfibre cloth and applying occasional microcrystalline wax to nourish the antique wood.
