A Unique Scottish Vernacular Toilet Mirror C.1830s

19th century
Description

A love token or wedding gift.

The rectangular plate above a tablet engraved with the words 'HOPE SWEETENS LIFE ANF LIFE ENDS BY DEATH'. The base is fitted with two drawers, one lining stamped with the letter 'W'. Both sides are inlaid with heart-shaped motifs.

There are isolated spots of historic worm. The back left foot is original, but the position has been brought inwards. There have been repairs to the veneer on the hearts on one side and other minor wear and tear commensurate with age.
