Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) and encompasses various revival styles, including Gothic, Elizabethan, and Rococo influences, typically characterised by heavy proportions and dark woods.

Cabinet makers during this period predominantly used dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and rosewood, frequently incorporating glass panels, brass hardware, and intricate wood veneers or inlay work.

Authentic pieces often exhibit period construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetail joints, old glass with minor imperfections or bubbles, traditional beeswax finishes, and signs of age-appropriate wear on the timber.

Such cabinets serve as focal points in modern living spaces to display curated collections of ceramics, glassware, or books, contrasting traditional dark timber with minimalist room palettes.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the timber.
