This mid-19th-century Victorian Country saltbox is constructed from mixed hardwoods including sycamore and cherry timber, displaying a warm brown palette with contrasting multi-tone vertical staves. The turned timber body features delicate parallel moulded rings around the upper and lower sections, a circular hinged lid fixed with small metal hinges, and an upright circular backboard pierced with a central round aperture. Natural surface wear and grain variation indicate the age of the piece. Measuring 28 cm high, 14 cm wide and 13 cm deep, this wall-hanging container is suited for display in a kitchen or utility area with narrow wall space, where it can hold small household items.

In 19th-century households, wooden salt boxes were essential kitchen accoutrements used to store salt near hearths or stoves, keeping the contents dry in damp environments.

These domestic items were typically crafted from native hardwoods, including oak, walnut, beech, and fruitwood, often featuring turned detailing or staved construction.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-turned shaping, historic iron or brass fixings, localized wear around the lid and hanging hole, and a warm, aged patina.

Antique treen objects are frequently wall-mounted in contemporary kitchens, arranged on open shelving, or styled alongside ceramic items on a mantlepiece.

To preserve historic woodenware, keep the item dry, dust regularly with a soft cloth, and occasionally apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish.
