Nineteenth-century gilt mirrors often reflect the revivalist movements of the Victorian era, incorporating classical motifs, ornate moulding, and rich gilding techniques inspired by earlier French and English periods.

These pieces typically feature a carved wooden base, often pine or softwood, covered in a layer of gesso. The surface was then meticulously water-gilded or oil-gilded with thin sheets of metal leaf.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-carved detailing, the presence of aged gesso with craquelure, foxing or oxidisation on the original mercury or silvered glass plate, and period-appropriate joinery on the reverse frame.

Positioning a large gilt mirror opposite a window maximises natural light and creates a focal point. It can be mounted above a fireplace mantel or rested against a wall to add contrast and texture to contemporary minimalist spaces.
