Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century French mirrors are characterised by ornate timber and gesso frames, often finished with gold leaf gilding or painted distemper. Popular styles from this period draw inspiration from Louis XVI and Rococo aesthetics, featuring classical cresting, floral motifs, and urn or cherub details.

Frames were typically constructed from pine or lime wood, shaped and detailed using sculpted gesso moulding. The surface was prepared with clay bole before applying genuine gold leaf using water-gilding techniques, housing mercury or silver-backed glass plates.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit subtle cracking (craquelure) in the gesso surface, reddish-brown clay bole showing through worn gilding, and dark spotting or foxing on the glass silvering. The backboards are usually rough-sawn pine planks fixed with period square-headed nails or screws.

A large French wall mirror can be positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece or console table to create a focal point. Alternatively, leaning an oversized mirror against a tall wall reflects natural light and adds architectural scale to living areas or hallways.

Dust the ornate frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid chipping delicate gesso details. Avoid applying water, liquid chemical cleaners, or spray polishes directly to gilded or painted surfaces, as moisture can dissolve the water-soluble gesso glue underneath.
