Description

A very nice example of a 17th Century Olive wood Lace Box in good original condition and of good colour, with highly burnished surface. The front and sides of the box are veneered in olive wood and contrasting warm coloured fruitwood. The back veneered in figured beach. The top made with olive wood oyster veneer, with contrasting geometric patten in Box wood. The thumb mould to the top and base is made in cross grained Olive wood. The inside has been lined later in Mahogany to smarten the appearance of the box.

Lace boxes originated during the late 17th century, predominantly during the Carolean and William & Mary periods, to store woven lace, collars, and flat textiles safe from creasing or damage.

These boxes were constructed with a softwood or oak carcass and faced with decorative timber veneers such as olive wood, walnut, or laburnum, often arranged in oyster cut patterns with boxwood stringing.

Authentic pieces feature transverse slices of small tree branches forming concentric ring patterns, hand-cut dovetail joints, thick hand-sawn veneers, and signs of natural wood shrinkage over time.

Display the box as a central decorative object on a hallway console table, a library sideboard, or stacked atop books on a coffee table to introduce historical woodwork.
