A Pair of Armorial Gothic Oak Hall Chairs with Arms

19th century
For Sale by Moxhams Antiques
Description

A pair of Victorian Gothic oak hall chairs wiith arms; turned front legs and green leather buttoned seats.

There was evidence of paint in the centre reserves, no doubt a crest or armorial which had been removed, so we commissioned a local artist to paint in the stags' heads.

All the carving of the back was done when the chairs were made, though it is possible that some old re-used oak planks were used as there are some marks on the backs. The horizontal line just above the level of the arms is probably the result of the chairs leaning against a dado rail for many years. But we have no doubt that the chairs are as they were originally made apart from the painted stag's head.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gothic Revival furniture emerged in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, drawing structural and decorative details from medieval ecclesiastical architecture, including pointed arches, tracery, carved heraldic shields, and heavy timber construction.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, and were frequently paired with leather upholstery, brass studding, and hand-painted coat of arms details.

Authentic period examples exhibit traditional joinery techniques, hand-carved detailing with subtle variations, natural timber grain, and genuine age-related surface oxidisation along the wood and metal fittings.

Gothic hall chairs function effectively as structured accent pieces when arranged symmetrically in an entrance hallway, study, or alongside a console table to add historic architectural interest.

Maintain the timber by regularly applying natural beeswax polish along the grain, and care for leather upholstery by wiping with a soft cloth and conditioning periodically to keep the material supple.
