Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. A pier glass is a tall, narrow mirror designed to be mounted on a pier, which is the section of wall between two windows. Popular in 18th-century interiors, these mirrors were placed above console tables to reflect light and create a sense of depth in grand rooms.

18th-century pier mirrors were typically constructed from carved timber frames coated with gesso, which was then layered with thin gold leaf using water gilding techniques. The mirror plates were made from silvered mercury glass, which produces a distinctive softness and aging over time.

Authentic pieces feature signs of age such as natural oxidation, known as foxing, within the mirror plate. The reverse side often shows hand-sawn timber backing panels, while the gilded frame displays subtle wear, micro-cracking in the gesso, and reddish bole clay peeking through the gold leaf.

A carved gilt mirror serves as a focal point when placed above a hallway console table or mounted on a narrow wall accent. Combining historical gilded elements with clean, modern architectural lines creates a refined visual contrast.

Dust the frame lightly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster. Water and chemical cleaning products should never be applied to water-gilded surfaces, as moisture can dissolve the underlying gesso and loosen the gold leaf.
