This Victorian English Country small stick back armchair is made from dark stained beech with a natural cane seat in a light beige shade. The dark brown timber exhibits distinct wear and softening along the curved armrests, while the turned legs terminate in simple ball feet beneath a series of spindles. It has a comb crest rail, a spindle upright back, and curved wooden armrests. The chair measures 87 cm high, 22 cm wide, and 41 cm deep. Suitable for a child or a very slight person, this rustic farmhouse piece works well as a decorative or functional seat in a bedroom, nursery, or sitting room. The newly re-finished surface and freshly woven cane provide a clean, sturdy finish while retaining the classic charm of nineteenth-century seating.

FAQs

A stick back armchair is a piece of vernacular country furniture constructed with turned or shaved wooden spindles socketed directly into a solid seat frame and a curved or comb-shaped top rail.

These chairs are commonly crafted from native regional hardwoods such as ash, elm, beech, or oak, featuring seats woven from natural rattan cane or split rush.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-turned or draw-knifed spindles, hand-bored socket joints with wedge construction, natural surface wear along the armrests, and uneven, hand-cut joinery.

Position the chair as an accent piece alongside neutral linen textiles, contemporary minimalist side tables, or textured wool rugs to create contrast between traditional timber craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the cane hydrated by wiping the underside occasionally with a damp cloth, avoid exposing the chair to direct heat sources which dry out natural fibers, and distribute weight evenly across the frame.
