Description

Late 19th century pair of Empire revival side chairs. The chairs have a scrolled top rail with a cast flower head on each end. The centre panel at the back and the seat pad have been reupholstered in a rich red damask. An ormolu mount is found to the back of the base, and the large stuffover seat has a stylish beaded rail running around all of the chair. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Emerging in the late nineteenth century, Empire Revival furniture draws inspiration from Napoleons First French Empire, characteristically featuring Neoclassical symmetry, dark woods, rich upholstery, and classical gilt-bronze or brass mounts.

Craftsmen primarily utilized dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, combined with gilt-bronze mounts, carved winged monopodia legs, and high-grade silk damask or velvet upholstery.

Look for heavy mahogany frames, hand-carved or cast gilt-bronze winged motifs, classical proportions, traditional hand-tied upholstery construction, and subtle signs of age such as natural oxidisation on metal mounts.

Place a pair on either side of a contemporary hallway console table or use them as accent seating in a formal reception room to contrast classical Neoclassical silhouettes against minimalist architectural lines.

Dust the wooden frames regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, clean metal ormolu mounts gently using a dry soft-bristled brush without chemical polishes, and keep textiles away from direct sunlight.
