This pair of Louis XV style salon armchairs dates from the mid-nineteenth century around 1850. The wooden frames carry a gold-coloured giltwood finish with carved cresting at the top of the rounded backs, cabriole legs, and padded manchettes on the curved arms. They are recently reupholstered in a blue and cream plaid fabric. Signs of age include slight wearing on the gilding of the frames. Each armchair measures 98 cm high, 65 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a traditional drawing room, study, or master bedroom, these French chateau style armchairs provide comfortable seating as accent chairs. They pair well with antique wooden side tables or desks, adding period character and soft pastel colouring to an interior scheme.

The fauteuil emerged in 18th-century France during the reign of Louis XV as an open-armed armchair designed for social drawing rooms and salons. Characterised by carved wooden frames, cabriole legs, and upholstered pads on the arms, these chairs were crafted to allow comfortable seating during social gatherings while displaying detailed woodworking.

Traditional French salon chairs were framed in solid hardwoods such as walnut, beech, or oak. The carved detailing was often highlighted with water gilding using gold leaf over a gesso base, and the seat construction utilized jute webbing, horsehair padding, and woven fabric upholstery.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved asymmetry, organic floral crestings, and curvi-linear cabriole legs. Examining the frame reveals mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs, alongside natural wear to the gilding that exposes the reddish clay bole or white gesso beneath.

A giltwood fauteuil acts as a focal accent piece when placed alongside streamlined modern furniture. Pairing the ornate carved frame with contemporary neutral walls or juxtaposing the antique gilding against matte surfaces creates a balanced contrast in living rooms or bedrooms.

Giltwood requires careful maintenance to prevent damage to the gold leaf layer. Dust the frame gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry feather duster, avoiding water or chemical cleaning agents which can dissolve the underlying gesso.
