Fine Pair of Antique Mahogany Collectors Cabinets by Standish

19th century
For Sale by Atropos Antiques
Description

A very fine pair of 12 drawer mahogany collectors cabinets by standish, a first class cabinet maker in the latter half of the 19th century.

These cabinets were built for the purpose of displaying and keeping safe, a collection of the larger lepidoptera but will, of course lend themselves to a multitude of collecting pursuits. The deeper than usual drawers will be highly beneficial in this aim.

The cabinets are beautifully constructed to a very high standard and the drawers run like silk. The drawer tops are glazed frames which fit well and are virtually air tight. Each drawer has a cunningly concealed cell to the inside front. The drawers have cork lined bases and are papered with the original papers and are hung on hidden runners. The cabinets stand on small bun feet.

All original hinges and locks with original keys are present and function well.

Height. 38.75 inches.

Width. 21.5 inches.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, collectors cabinets were designed to store organised collections such as coins, medals, biological specimens, prints, or minerals within small, shallow drawers.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from high-grade dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, solid timber drawer linings, and precision brass fittings to protect contents from dust.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate construction markers, including hand-planed timber, original brass lock mechanisms, natural drawer runner wear, and occasionally stamped maker marks or brass maker plates.

These versatile storage units function effectively in modern home offices or dressing rooms, providing organised arrangement for stationery, jewellery, artists materials, or small personal items.

Maintain timber surfaces by dusting with a soft dry cloth and applying natural beeswax sparingly along the wood grain, while keeping the item away from direct heat sources to prevent wood shrinkage.
