Description

A superb and historic honduras mahogany collectors cabinet property of the late j.c.dale circa 1860. Dale was possibly the most important, knowledgeable and influential entomologist in british history. He discovered many species and devoted his entire life to the study of entomology. The lulworth skipper was first identified by dale. His legacy lives on in the collections of the hope department, oxford university museum.

Dale was born on the 13th december 1791 and died on the 6th february 1872. In his long life he contributed more to entomology across all orders than any other british entomologist.

The cabinet is solid mahogany throughout and contains 40 drawers each with a glazed frame top and universal cell.

Interesting to entomologists the drawers still have the original papering, almost certainly laid in by dale himself and showing ghosted outlines of dales collection of british lepidoptera! This in itself is fascinating and important in it's rarity.

The cabinet is built with highly figured honduras mahogany and typical of the style in the mid 19th century.

Dale always chose to 'back' his cabinets with the trademark fabric covering that still graces this example. Behind is the standard panelled back.

A fine and beautiful cabinet of beauty and aesthetically pleasing proportions.

This Regency style collectors cabinet dates from 1860 and belongs to the mid nineteenth century period. The piece is constructed from solid Honduras mahogany with flame mahogany panels displaying a warm brown timber colour. Twin panelled doors open to reveal a central bank of forty shallow drawers arranged in vertical columns, each fitted with small turned wooden pull knobs. The cabinet rests on short turned bun feet and includes brass hardware on the right hand door leaf. The whole structure measures 127 cm high by 86.5 cm wide and 48.5 cm deep.
