Fine Pair 19th-Century Antique Louis XVI Style Giltwood Upholstered Armchairs

Brief Description:

This is a very fine pair of 19th-century antique giltwood open armchairs, designed in the elegant French Louis XVI style and upholstered in sumptuous champagne-gold floral damask upholstery.

The elaborate frames display delightful carved floral and foliate decoration, with particularly attractive pierced cresting to the tops of the backrests.

Louis XVI style furniture is defined by Neoclassical design principles, featuring straight lines, geometric symmetry, and classical motifs inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity. Common decorative elements include fluted turned legs, leaf carvings, guilloche borders, and oval or medallion backrests.

Traditional giltwood armchairs were constructed using carved hardwoods such as beech or oak, coated with gesso, and finished with real gold leaf gilding. Upholstery traditionally incorporated natural materials such as horsehair stuffing, webbed jute support, and silk damask or velvet fabric.

Authentic period armchairs exhibit hand-carved wooden joinery with pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, subtle wear or oxidisation to the gilt surface, and hand-tacked upholstery foundations. Uneven hand-planed surfaces under the frame and natural patina on unexposed wood also indicate original age.

These formal armchairs can be styled alongside low-profile modern sofas to create a balanced contrast of textures and eras. Placing a pair opposite a modern coffee table or within a bedroom alcove highlights their architectural silhouette while softening clean contemporary spaces.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or chemical polish which can dissolve delicate gesso and gold leaf. Silk upholstery requires light vacuuming with a soft attachment and protection from direct sunlight to prevent fibre degradation and colour fading.
