Set of 10 Georgian Ladderback Farmhouse Kitchen Dining Chairs Early 19th Century

18th century
Description

A Very Attractive And Extremely Good Quality, Rarely Found, Early 19th Century Georgian Ash & Elm Harlequin Set Of 10 Farmhouse Kitchen Dining Chairs, Having Attractive Ladder Backs With Turned Upright Supports Over Rushed Seats, Raised On Elegant Bulbous Turned Legs United By Stretchers.

Most designs of ladderback, or spindleback, chairs produced during the 18th and 19th centuries can generally be attributed to a particular region of the United Kingdom, owing to the individual design quirks and construction methods employed by local craftsmen. These chairs are no different, the particular combination of bold turned legs and shaped ladderbacks typically being associated with the West of the country and Wales.

Another aspect which we particularly like about this set is that they are genuinely Georgian and early 19th century examples, meaning they possess real character, colour, patina and signs of honest use, unlike many later 19th or early 20th century examples regularly encountered on the market today. Naturally this has resulted in the expected minor nicks, marks, scrapes and general signs of age, although nothing which detracts from either the appearance or structural integrity of the chairs.

Overall the chairs are in excellent functional condition and are ready to be placed immediately around a dining table and put straight into use. The rush seats are all in good order and have clearly been re-rushed at various stages during their lives, relatively recently, meaning they should not require any attention for quite some time.

As is almost always the case with English country chairs, this is a harlequin, or matched, set and therefore there are minor variations in both design and dimensions from one chair to another. In truth however they match remarkably well in comparison to many similar sets we have encountered previously. We have ensured that the range of measurements is quoted accurately should this be important to prospective purchasers.

As with all items which we offer for sale, the chairs have been attended to in our workshops by our trained traditional antique furniture restorers to ensure they are presented in the best possible condition before being offered for sale, including being finished with a lovely natural wax polish.

Perfect for either a rustic farmhouse kitchen or a more formal townhouse interior, these chairs possess tremendous versatility whilst also representing excellent value for money.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Baluster-turned front stretchers and pad feet: early nineteenth-century regional design.
Wavy ladder rungs tenoned into uprights: traditional handmade chair construction.
Dark finish rubbed through on high points: age and handling over generations.
Minor variations across turnings and finials: hand-crafted chairs assembled into a set.
Crisp rush weaving: seats re-rushed in recent decades.

This set of ten early nineteenth-century Georgian country ladderback dining chairs follows a traditional vernacular style originating in the West of the country and Wales. The dark brown timber construction comprises shaped wavy horizontal slats within turned upright supports, above woven rush seats and bold bulbous turned legs united by turned front stretchers resting on pad feet. Minor nicks, marks, scrapes, and general signs of age display an honest patina developed over time. Each dining chair measures 102 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 48 cm deep. Designed for a rustic farmhouse kitchen or a formal townhouse interior, these chairs provide versatile seating around a dining table. The matched harlequin set combines varied yet complementary construction methods and dimensions across all ten items, while the professionally waxed finish highlights the grain of the oak and rush materials. The freshly re-rushed seats remain in sturdy condition for everyday dining use without requiring immediate restoration.

Ladderback chairs originated as regional country furniture during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in Britain. Characterised by horizontal slats reminiscent of a ladder, these chairs were produced by local cabinetmakers for everyday practical use in farmhouses and rural homes.

These chairs were primarily constructed from regional hardwoods such as oak, ash, or elm, joined with traditional mortise and tenon joints. The seats were woven using natural rushes or reeds, providing flexible yet durable support.

Authentic period chairs display hand-cut joinery, subtle asymmetry from hand-tooling, and natural wear around the stretchers and footrests. The timber should show genuine patination and shrinkage marks around joints, while original rush seats show age-appropriate wear and colour variation.

Pairing a large set of ladderback chairs with a simple contemporary oak or zinc table creates a balanced contrast between old and new. The warm timber tones and tactile rush seats add organic texture to minimalist or modern farmhouse dining spaces.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly and applying beeswax occasionally along the wood grain. Avoid using water or harsh chemical cleaners on the woven rush seats, and lightly vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove dust from the weave.
