Wavy Ladder Back Chairs in Ash, Set of Eight (6+2), C1830

19th century
Description

A well matched set of 8 ladderback chairs (6 x side chairs with 2 x armchairs) in original condition / finish and all bar one chair in the same age rush (one chair later re-rushed).English ash, made in Lancashire early / mid 19th century.

The design of the Wavy ladder back rush seat chair originated in Lancashire in the late 18th century and many examples have survived due to their robust and usable construction. Indeed the design has been replicated by numerous chair makers over the years with examples still being made today. These 8 chairs form a ‘superior’ set, in terms of originality and colour. They were sold by a well known West Country dealer in 2003 for £5,000.

The set comes with shaped and zipped tie-on cushions for each chair.

Restoration / Condition: Small patches on arms of one armchair above arm support turnings. Evidence of some historic wood worm. So many of this style of chair have undergone restoration of one kind or another over the years, so it is rare to find a set in such original condition.

This set of eight English country dining chairs comprises six side chairs and two carver armchairs made from ash in Lancashire during the early to mid nineteenth century. Each chair displays a warm brown finish with visible grain, featuring woven rush seats, wavy ladder back slats, turned stretchers, and pad feet. The two carvers include high, arched armrests supported by vertical turnings above the seat level. The construction includes small patches on the arms of one armchair, evidence of historic woodworm, and one chair with a later re-rushed seat. These ladderback chairs suit a traditional dining room around a rustic wooden table, providing flexible seating for family meals and gatherings. The side chairs measure between 50 cm and 51 cm in width, 97 cm and 99 cm in height, and 41 cm and 44 cm in depth, while the armchairs measure between 63 cm and 64 cm in width, 109 cm and 111 cm in height, and 54 cm and 56 cm in depth.

Wavy ladder back chairs are a traditional style of country seating featuring horizontal back slats with undulating upper edges supported by turned vertical posts.

These chairs are constructed from native hardwoods such as ash, oak, or elm, assembled using mortise and tenon joinery and fitted with woven rush or straw seats.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-turned stretchers, natural timber grain variations, pegged joints, and historic wear on the lower rungs and seat rails.

A set of ladder back chairs can be paired with a simple modern or rustic timber dining table to introduce texture and historical contrast into contemporary dining spaces.

Dust the timber frames regularly and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically, taking care to keep the woven rush seats dry to prevent moisture damage.
