Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Single-slot screws throughout the brasswork: made before cross-head screws were invented.
Spring-catch secret compartment behind the pen tray: characteristic Victorian cabinet work.
Solid brass corner straps and protective edging: built for nineteenth-century travel.
Dense curl mahogany veneer: typical timber choice of the mid-nineteenth century.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This nineteenth-century Regency writing slope is made from reddish-brown curl grain mahogany with a polished finish. The exterior displays double brass stringing inlay around the edges, a central brass cartouche on the lid, and a brass escutcheon on the front fitted with a key. Brass banding edges the box, and the piece measures 15 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 25 cm deep. Position this elegant item on a desk in a gentleman's library or home office to serve as a functional workspace accessory. The interior provides a practical surface for writing letters, while the compact dimensions allow it to sit comfortably on standard tables or shelves without dominating the room.

Writing slopes were designed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as portable desk surfaces for correspondence while travelling. They fold open to provide a sloped writing surface alongside compartments for inkwells, quills, and stationery.

High-grade hardwoods such as flame mahogany, rosewood, and walnut were predominantly used for the exterior veneer. Brass was frequently applied for binding, corner protectors, stringing, and escutcheons to reinforce structural joints during transit.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass flush handles or bindings, and evidence of historic wear around internal folds. Secondary woods like oak or pine are typically present in internal drawer construction.

A writing slope functions as a refined accent piece displayed closed on an executive office desk, console table, or library bookshelf. It can also serve as decorative storage for small personal items or stationery.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to preserve the original patina. Avoid chemical abrasives on brass mounts to prevent removal of historic surface oxidisation.
