Pair of 19th Century English Carved Moulded Pine Frame Mirrors

19th century
Description

The deep moulded frames retain a beautifully timeworn surface, with a softly developed patina revealing the natural grain of the timber and the subtle irregularities acquired through age and use.

The original mirror plates are richly foxed, their silvering having naturally oxidised over time to create dramatic, organic areas of mottling across the glass. Importantly, the mirrors remain functional, retaining a clear reflection while the aged silvering lends a softer, atmospheric quality that makes them equally appealing as decorative panels.

The frames show expected signs of age, including historic knocks, minor losses and sympathetic old repairs. These are entirely consistent with their period and add to the character, authenticity and understated rustic elegance of the pair.

Date of Manufacture

The Real Wood Furniture Company has dated these Pine Moulded Wall Mirrors to the 19th Century.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of nineteenth-century English country wall mirrors brings rustic character to an interior through warm brown pine frames and glass plates. Each rectangular mirror has a deep moulded stepped profile that frames the original glass. The timber possesses a softly developed timeworn patina that reveals the natural grain, accompanied by historic knocks, minor losses, and sympathetic old repairs acquired through age and use. The glass plates display rich foxing with naturally oxidised silvering that creates dramatic, organic areas of mottling across the surface while maintaining functionality. Measuring 53 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, these pieces offer versatile proportions for placement in a home. They sit well hung above a sideboard in a dining room, hallway, or living space to add an authentic period touch with atmospheric reflection.

FAQs

During the 19th century in Britain, pine was widely used for interior woodwork and mirror framing, characterised by deep moulded profiles and hand-carved detailing typical of traditional country interiors.

These frames were constructed using solid softwood, typically Scots pine, featuring mitred or mortise and tenon corner joints and silvered glass plates secured with solid timber backboards.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural timber shrinkage along the joints, hand-planed backing panels, and genuine foxing or oxidisation marks on the reflective silvering of the glass.

A pair can be arranged symmetrically above a dining room sideboard, positioned side by side in a hallway, or hung within adjacent alcoves to introduce warmth and architectural framing.

Dust the timber frame regularly using a dry microfiber cloth and apply a clear beeswax paste periodically, avoiding liquid cleaners directly on the original mirror plate to prevent silvering degradation.
