This large nineteenth-century French mirror combines carved wood and gesso with an original painted and gilt finish in gold. The piece displays a detailed cherub cresting at the top centre, urn-style finials on the upper corners, and narrow marginal mirror plates set within beaded mouldings around the main glass. Visible wear appears across the frame surface and the silvering of the antique glass. The entire structure measures 196 cm high by 100 cm wide, with a depth of 8 cm at the top and 4 cm in the middle. Suitable for various domestic settings, the mirror functions well when hung on a wall or placed directly on the floor. It fits comfortably above a drawing room mantelpiece, in a grand entrance hallway, or as a dressing mirror in a bedroom, reflecting light to brighten living spaces while maintaining its period French chateau character.

Nineteenth-century French giltwood mirrors are characterised by hand-carved timber frames prepared with a plaster-like gesso substrate before gold leaf application. Design styles from this era frequently drew inspiration from classical Louis XVI and Neoclassical motifs, incorporating crestings with cherubs, urns, floral garlands, and beaded borders.

These mirrors were constructed using softwood or hardwood bases shaped by woodcarvers, covered in multiple layers of gesso. Water-gilding techniques applied thin sheets of genuine gold leaf over a clay bole background, surrounding mercury-silvered glass plates.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit hand-carved joinery marks on the reverse wooden backboards and subtle distress where the reddish or grey clay bole shows beneath worn gold leaf. The mirror glass often demonstrates light foxing or small dark spots from the historical mercury silvering process.

A large French giltwood mirror functions as a focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece or positioned atop a contemporary sideboard. Placing ornate carved gilding against plain, minimalist walls creates architectural contrast and enhances light distribution throughout the space.

Gilded gesso frames should be dusted exclusively with a soft, dry horsehair brush or microfiber cloth without applying liquid sprays or damp cloths. Keeping the mirror in a climate-controlled environment prevents the timber from moving and cracking the delicate gesso surface.
