Corner chairs, also known as roundabout chairs, originated in the early 18th century and remained popular through the 19th century, designed to fit into room corners and accommodate full-skirted garments while seated.

Victorian corner chairs were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as burr elm, oak, mahogany, or walnut, combined with turned timber supports and upholstered drop-in seats.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut joinery, distinct timber grain patterns such as burr figuring, age-appropriate wear to turned legs, and historical construction techniques beneath the seat frame.

A corner chair functions effectively as an accent piece in an unused corner, beside a fireplace hearth, or positioned at a writing desk in a home office or library.

Maintain burr elm timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth, applying a neutral beeswax polish along the wood grain twice yearly, and placing the piece away from direct radiators or moist air.
