Large 19th Century Italian Ebonised and Faux Tortoiseshell Mirror - No1

19th century
Description

We have been fortunate to get hold of some truly stunning 19th century Italian frames that we have added high quality 6mm mirror plate too.

\These mirrors make incredible features on any wall in a great number of interiors. The design is arguably quite contemporary which is why I love this particular style of frame.

The moulding is incredibly fine and when I spoke to my restorer about these he informed me just how hard it is to make this moulding so it really is a testament to the crafts people of the time that created these.

This example is one of our nicest we have had with the faux tortoiseshell details. Rich colour and the perfect contrast to the ebonised frame. The frame also has a great depth to it as well giving it a real presence. There is small split to the bottom right corner. But its stable.

126cm by 95cm

Can be hung either portrait or landscape.

This large nineteenth-century Italian Baroque Revival wall mirror presents a rectangular profile framed in dark ebonised wood accented with amber faux tortoiseshell insets and fine moulded architectural panel borders. The dark frame holds a high-quality six-millimetre mirror plate with a deep profile, showing a stable small split to the bottom right corner. Measuring 126 cm high by 95 cm wide and 4 cm deep, the piece hangs either portrait or landscape. Suitably scaled for a gentleman's library or hallway, this wall mirror hangs well above a sideboard to reflect light and add architectural presence to an interior. The rich contrast between the black ebonised surface and the warm amber tortoiseshell tones creates a strong visual focal point in traditional and contemporary settings alike.

Originating in Northern Italy and Flanders during the 17th century and remaining popular through the 19th century, ebonised furniture with tortoiseshell insets reflected Flemish architectural influences. Craftspeople ebonised native hardwoods to imitate ebony, pairing the dark borders with natural or faux tortoiseshell for visual contrast.

These frames were constructed using dense hardwoods such as pearwood, beech, or walnut, which were stained dark to mimic ebony. The decorative insets utilised either genuine hawksbill sea turtle shell layered over coloured foil or hand-crafted cellulose compounds designed to simulate tortoiseshell pattern.

Authentic period frames typically exhibit hand-carved wood mouldings with subtle variations, visible joinery techniques on the reverse, and age-related wear or faint crazing in the ebonised finish. Mirror glass from this era often features silvering oxidation or original bevelled edges.

A large ebonised mirror serves as a focal point when positioned above a console table, mantelpiece, or sideboard. The dark frame and warm brown tones complement neutral plaster walls, dark timber furniture, and polished metal accents.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or soft brush. Avoid chemical cleaners, solvent-based polishes, or excessive moisture, as these can degrade lacquer layers and loosen decorative inset panels.
