This Georgian toilet mirror is constructed from warm brown mahogany with boxwood line inlay framing the mirror plate and the serpentine front. The piece comprises an oval swing plate held within curved uprights, mounted on a base with three small drawers fitted with tiny metal knobs and keyholes, all raised on bracket feet. Foxing is visible across the reflective surface of the glass, alongside minor surface wear appropriate to its age. Measuring 50 cm high, 28 cm wide, and 20 cm deep, the mirror functions practically on a sideboard, chest of drawers, or dressing table in a bedroom, hallway, or living area. It provides a classic Georgian accent suitable for traditional and country house interiors.

Originating in the early eighteenth century, a toilet mirroror swing glasswas designed to sit atop a chest of drawers or dressing table. The term derives from toilette, referencing the daily ritual of dressing and grooming, with integrated drawers created to store jewellery, cosmetics, and accessories.

These mirrors were primarily constructed from solid and veneered mahogany, often featuring boxwood or satinwood stringing. The drawers typically utilise pine or oak as secondary woods, assembled with hand-cut dovetail joints, brass hardware, and hand-cut mirror glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut drawer dovetails, oxidation on secondary timber, and original brass swivel fixings. Original mirror plates often display age-related grey spots or slight silvering degradation known as foxing, alongside irregular wood thickness visible on the backboard.

While traditionally placed on a bedroom dressing table, these mirrors function well as decorative accents on hallway console tables, bathroom vanity tops, or bedroom sideboards, introducing warm wood tones and historical balance to contemporary spaces.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood finish. Avoid moisture on unvarnished areas, keep out of direct sunlight, and clean the glass plate with a soft cloth dampened only with water.
