This unusual Chinoiserie hall or dressing mirror dates from 1900 and follows an early 18th century style. The piece uses wood, lacquer, mirror glass, and gold leaf, presented in a black and gold colour scheme. The black lacquer ground carries raised coloured lacquer and gilded highlights depicting Chinese characters, willow trees, rocks, foliage, and a pagoda. An arched cresting tops the frame, which frames a bevel-edged mirror plate. Front cabriole legs with pad feet support the base, decorated with further Chinoiserie motifs, and the frame shows floral borders down the sides. Practical placement suits a narrow wall space in an English country house interior, functioning in a hallway or dressing room. The dimensions measure 188 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 6.5 cm deep.

Chinoiserie is a European decorative style originating in the seventeenth century that imitation and interpretation of East Asian artistic traditions, featuring lacquered surfaces, pagodas, figures, and nature motifs.

Traditional pieces feature built-up layers of lacquer or varnish applied over a wooden substrate, decorated with hand-painted gilding or metallic powder and fitted with silvered mirror glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit raised hand-applied gilding showing natural age wear, fine cracking or craquelure across the lacquer finish, and oxidation on the silvered mirror backing.

Place the mirror in a hallway, entryway, or alcove to contrast graphic dark finish and gilded details against modern neutral wall paint.

Dust lacquered frames with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical cleaners or excess moisture, and clean the glass plate using a damp cloth carefully applied to avoid touching the gilded lacquer.
