This early 18th century style Chinoiserie hall mirror stands as a wall-mounted piece with integrated cabriole legs and pad feet, measuring 188 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 6.5 cm deep. The construction utilises wood and mirror glass with a black lacquer finish, enriched by raised coloured lacquer motifs and gilded highlights depicting pagodas, figures, willow trees, and floral borders across the arched cresting and frame. The visible details comprise a bevel-edged mirror plate, sweeping arched top moulding, and curved front legs terminating in padded feet, all accented by continuous gold ornamentation. Suitable for domestic placement in a narrow wall space, hallway, or dressing area, the piece functions as both an upright reflective glass surface and a decorative vertical accent in an English country house interior. The application of gold leaf and black lacquer establishes a striking contrast, while the structural base allows the mirror to be floor-supported in conjunction with wall mounting.

FAQs

Chinoiserie is a European decorative style originating in the seventeenth century that imitation and interpretation of East Asian artistic traditions, featuring lacquered surfaces, pagodas, figures, and nature motifs.

Traditional pieces feature built-up layers of lacquer or varnish applied over a wooden substrate, decorated with hand-painted gilding or metallic powder and fitted with silvered mirror glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit raised hand-applied gilding showing natural age wear, fine cracking or craquelure across the lacquer finish, and oxidation on the silvered mirror backing.

Place the mirror in a hallway, entryway, or alcove to contrast graphic dark finish and gilded details against modern neutral wall paint.

Dust lacquered frames with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical cleaners or excess moisture, and clean the glass plate using a damp cloth carefully applied to avoid touching the gilded lacquer.
