This nineteenth-century antique French slipper chair is an upholstered occasional seat designed for bedroom or fireside use. It measures 83 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 67 cm deep, standing on dark black cabriole legs with carved scrolling feet. The tall backrest features a plain white fabric cover fixed with small metal upholstery tacks along the side edges. The seat pad displays exposed coarse brown burlap hessian material with visible interior stuffing stitches, showing a work-in-progress restoration state without a final top cover. The exposed wooden frame beneath the seat cushion exhibits a light brown timber grain tone with visible tack holes and age wear. In a contemporary interior, this period piece functions as an armchair beside a fireplace, a vanity seat in a bedroom, or a decorative occasional chair in a hallway or sitting room. The neutral white and brown tones integrate easily with traditional and transitional room schemes. The low profile and lack of armrests make it suitable for smaller spaces or tighter corners while providing a comfortable seating height.

Originating in 18th-century France as a chauffeuse, a slipper chair is a low-slung, armless upholstered chair designed primarily for use in bedrooms and dressing rooms.

These chairs typically feature solid hardwood frames, hand-stitched hessian webbing, coil springs, natural horsehair stuffing, and carved cabriole legs.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit hand-carved joinery, traditional upholstery techniques such as stitched burlap or calico linings, and natural wear to original painted or ebonised wood finishes.

Position the chair in a bedroom corner, dressing room, or living space alongside a low side table to create a layered, texturally rich seating area.

Keep the timber legs clean with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid placing the chair in direct sunlight to prevent timber drying, and professionally vacuum or re-upholster textile elements using traditional methods.
