Pair of Regency Maple Leather Library Armchairs, Circa 1820

19th century
For Sale by Leeds Antiques
Description

Pair of Regency Maple Leather Library Armchairs, c.1820

A fine pair of English Regency library armchairs, dating to circa 1820, of elegant tub form, with Maple legs and recently reupholstered in hand-dyed tan leather using traditional methods and materials.

Each chair features a generously rounded, gently reclining back, sweeping gracefully into low-set upholstered arms above a deep, comfortable seat. The hand-dyed leather displays a rich variation of honey, golden tan and mellow amber tones, with natural differences in shading lending depth and character to the upholstery. Traditional brass studding provides a decorative finish, complementing the warm tones of the timber.

The chairs stand on finely turned and tapering maple front legs, with gently splayed rear legs, all terminating in brass castors. The timber exhibits subtle figuring, a mellow golden-brown colour and a pleasing patina acquired over two centuries.

Of refined proportions, the chairs combine the distinctive elegance of Regency design with considerable comfort and practicality. Their compact dimensions, generous seat height and unusually low-set arms make them especially versatile, equally suited to use as library or drawing room chairs, occasional seating or as a distinguished pair of desk chairs.

Professionally reupholstered using traditional techniques and materials, the chairs retain the character and integrity of their original antique frames. The result is a handsome and remarkably comfortable pair of period armchairs, offering an appealing balance of historical charm and everyday usability.

Dimensions (each chair):

Height: 84.5 cm (33.25 inches)

Width: 61 cm (24 inches)

Depth: 68.5 cm (27 inches)

Seat height: 48.5 cm (19 inches)

Arm height: 57.5 cm (22.75 inches)

Condition:

Excellent antique condition. Recently reupholstered in hand-dyed leather using traditional methods and materials. The leather has a natural, softly varied finish, with gentle tonal differences that enhance its character. The timber retains its aged patina, with minor surface marks and signs of wear, principally to the legs, consistent with age and use.

Regency library armchairs from the early 19th century typically feature curved barrel-style backs, low profiles, fine timber framing such as maple or mahogany, and durable leather upholstery designed for study and reading spaces.

These armchairs were built using solid timber framesfrequently maple, oak, or mahoganyalongside horsehair padding, brass castors, and close-studded leather trim.

Authentic pieces exhibit traditional joinery techniques, original brass castors with age-appropriate wear, hand-tacked studding, and patinated leather showing historic surface creasing rather than modern uniform finishes.

Position a pair opposite a neutral modern sofa or alongside a tailored bookcase to create a focused reading area that balances structured contemporary elements with warm leather tones.

Keep leather seating away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or cracking, and regularly apply a specialized leather wax or conditioner to maintain supple leather and preserve patina.
