Victorian Rosewood Vanity Dressing Jewellery Box Mother of Pearl Secret Drawer C1860

19th century
Description

An attractive and substantial Victorian rosewood fitted vanity and travelling dressing case, dating to circa 1860, retaining an impressive selection of period glassware, decorative metal fittings and personal grooming accessories.

The rectangular rosewood case displays a rich, warm colour and attractive natural grain, with an oval mother-of-pearl cartouche inset into the hinged lid. The interior is fitted with deep green velvet and divided into individual compartments for the original-style glass bottles, jars and dressing accessories.

Of particular interest are the two decorative silver-coloured metal containers with finely pierced floral and foliate decoration, together with several glass jars fitted with circular metal covers and additional bottles with substantial faceted glass stoppers.

The case also retains a selection of period grooming implements, including two beautifully carved mother-of-pearl-handled accessories, a further mother-of-pearl-handled implement, a corkscrew and a small pair of steel scissors.

A concealed folding panel reveals a mirror, while the lower section houses a full-width secret drawer with three green velvet-lined compartments, originally intended for jewellery and other personal possessions.

A fine example of Victorian fitted dressing-case craftsmanship, combining practical travelling storage with the decorative elegance associated with 19th-century personal accessories.

Condition: Good antique condition commensurate with age and use. The rosewood exterior displays surface scratches, marks and some edge wear. The green velvet lining shows age-related wear and fading, while the mirror has deterioration to its reflective surface. Several glass containers have small chips, and one has a slight crack. The metal fittings display surface scratching, tarnishing and general wear. Some original accessories are no longer present. No key is included. The metal fittings have not been tested for silver content.

Dimensions: 29 cm wide × 21.5 cm deep × 16 cm high.

Weight: Just under 3 kg.

Period: Victorian, circa 1860.

Origin: Probably English.

An appealing collector’s piece, suitable for display, an antique dressing table or a collection of Victorian boxes and personal accessories.

This Victorian rosewood vanity box, dating to circa 1860, is presented as a rectangular travelling dressing case with a rich dark brown timber grain, an oval mother-of-pearl keyhole escutcheon, and brass hardware hinges. The hinged lid lifts to reveal a deep green ruched velvet interior lining, housing fitted glass jars with circular metal covers, faceted glass stoppers, and silver-plated containers with pierced floral and foliate decoration alongside grooming implements with carved mother-of-pearl handles. The box measures 29 cm wide by 21.5 cm deep by 16 cm high. Positioned on a sideboard top, dressing table or within a collection of Victorian boxes, the piece provides decorative storage for small personal accessories and jewellery. The exterior displays surface scratches and edge wear, while the green velvet lining shows fading and age-related wear. The metal fittings exhibit tarnishing, and some original implements are missing, reflecting its functional history and antique status.

A Victorian vanity box, also known as a dressing case, is a specialised wooden container designed during the 19th century to hold grooming tools, glass jars, perfume bottles, and personal jewellery.

These cases were typically constructed from hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, and lined with silk or velvet. Interior fittings included glass jars with silver-plated or sterling silver lids, mother-of-pearl details, and steel grooming implements.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, period brass hardware, concealed drawers accessed via pin-release mechanisms, and hallmarks or maker marks on metal fittings and jar lids.

A Victorian vanity box can be displayed open on a bedroom dressing table or a hallway console table to showcase the fitted interior and glass accessories.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood movement and velvet fading. Apply natural beeswax polish to the wooden exterior while avoiding contact with interior fabrics and metal fittings.
