A nineteenth-century Regency pier glass mirror in giltwood and gesso, featuring a vertical wall-hanging design measuring 93 cm in height, 59 cm in width, and 10 cm in depth. The architectural frame includes a turret corner pediment set with corvetto balls and a stiff leaf lower moulding, alongside a frieze housing a verre eglomise panel with scrolling foliage against a powder blue ground and a rose and draped centre. Flanking the attractively darkening plate glass mirror are reeded columns with Corinthian capitals and rising leaves. In a modern interior, this piece suits a narrow wall space in an entrance hallway, a drawing room, or above a console table. The gold finish shows gentle patination across the carved and moulded surfaces. The ball cornice, fluted columns, and gilded floral motifs provide traditional ornamentation typical of the period style. The glass reflects signs of age with natural darkening of the plate, while the structural composition combines carved wood elements with decorative reverse-painted glass panels.

A pier glass is a tall, narrow mirror designed originally to hang between windows in 18th and early 19th-century interiors to reflect natural light. Regency examples frequently incorporate classical architectural motifs, fluted columns, ball ornamentation, and reverse-painted verre eglomise glass panels above the main mirror plate.

These mirrors were constructed with wooden framing, typically pine or lime, carved and finished with water or oil gilding over layered bole and gesso. Verre eglomise involves applying leaf metal and paint directly onto the reverse side of glass, paired with mercury or silver-backed mirror plates.

Authentic period pieces display age-related craquelure and surface wear on the gilding, often revealing the underlying clay bole. The backboards typically feature hand-sawn timber panels, while original mirror glass exhibits characteristic foxing, minor silvering degradation, or slight optical distortion.

Position the mirror above a console table, on a chimney breast, or in a narrow entryway to maximise vertical proportions and light reflection. The gilded architectural framework creates contrast when placed against dark painted walls or understated neutral schemes.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry brush or feather duster, avoiding water or chemical cleansers that dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Clean the central mirror glass carefully with a dampened microfibre cloth, ensuring moisture does not contact the frame rebate or the reverse-painted upper glass panel.
