This nineteenth-century French Louis Philippe overmantel mirror demonstrates classical style, manufactured from wood, gesso, and silver leaf with mirror glass. The silvered finish displays authentic foxing and subtle sparkle, showing natural aging across the surface alongside the original glass plate and panelled backboards with four wall brackets on the reverse. The moulded frame exhibits finely carved details including a central egg-and-anchor motif, beaded moulding on the outer edge, and a leaf-and-dart border alongside the glass, set upon plinth corners with an arched top. The piece measures 125 cm high, 129 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. It is designed for placement above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or bedroom within a home today.

Louis Philippe style mirrors originated in 19th-century France during the reign of King Louis Philippe (18301848). They are characterised by rounded upper corners, flat bottom edges designed to sit flush on a mantelpiece, and understated gilded moulding.

Traditional 19th-century overmantel mirrors were constructed with solid wood backings and frames covered in gesso. The decorative surfaces were finished with applied silver leaf or gold leaf, housing silvered glass plates.

Authentic period pieces usually feature original wooden backboards made of pine or oak, joinery secured with hand-cut nails, subtle hairline cracking in the gesso layer, and natural oxidisation spots on the mirror glass.

Position the mirror directly above a living room fireplace or resting on a hallway console table to add verticality and reflect ambient light, pairing silver tones with neutral paint schemes or dark wood paneling.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush to avoid damaging delicate gesso or leafing. Clean the glass plate with a lightly dampened lint-free cloth, avoiding spray cleaners that could seep into the frame edges.
