This Sheraton Revival desk chair dates from 1890 and originates from England. It is constructed from mahogany and upholstered in a vibrant red velvet. The piece features a padded shield-shaped back with a serpentine top and a carved show-frame, complemented by padded elbows adorned with stylised leaves and ribbon twist details. A wide stuffover seat sits above a fluted seatrail, while the front is supported by turned, fluted, tapering legs with carved rosette terminals. Very small scuffs to the wood align with age, accompanied by a pleasing patina. The chair measures 94 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 47 cm deep. Suitable for use in a gentleman's library or a home study, this elbow chair functions well as a desk chair. The combination of dark brown timber and bright red upholstery makes it a striking addition to a workspace. It stands stably and provides comfortable seating for everyday use, bringing classic late 19th-century English design into contemporary interior settings.

Sheraton Revival emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, drawing inspiration from Thomas Sheratons late eighteenth-century Neoclassical designs. The style is recognised for lightweight proportions, linear forms, shield or square chair backs, and decorative carved details such as fluting and floral motifs.

Pieces from this period were typically constructed using solid mahogany or satinwood frames with traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Upholstery was supported by webbed seat frames and stuffed with natural fillings like horsehair, finished with fabrics such as velvet, damask, or leather.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved decorative elements, crisp fluting on turned front legs, and natural wear or patination on the timber. Inspecting the underside reveals traditional construction methods, hand-cut joinery, and historical upholstery tacks.

Position the chair alongside a contemporary timber writing desk or place it in a reading corner in a home office. The rich mahogany frame and structured silhouette create visual balance when contrasted with clean-lined modern furniture.

Vacuum the velvet upholstery regularly using a soft brush attachment to prevent dust build-up. Clean the mahogany timber frame using a dry microfiber cloth and nourish the wood periodically with a natural beeswax polish, avoiding harsh chemical sprays.
