This large antique French Louis XV style mirror dates from the nineteenth century and brings a classic chateau aesthetic to interiors. The piece consists of a tall, arched giltwood frame finished in bright gold over gesso, housing an original mercury glass plate with a clear sparkle. Elaborate rocaille cresting tops the design, decorated with detailed foliate scrolls, carved shells, and delicate floral motifs that cascade down the upper corners of the frame. The lower section maintains a clean, simple moulding profile along the base and sides. The mirror measures 193 cm high and 118 cm wide. Position this substantial mirror as a freestanding leaner against a bedroom or hallway wall, or mount it securely above a living room mantelpiece to reflect natural light across the space. The sturdy construction retains its original timber backboards, offering both decorative presence and functional depth. The combination of ornate sculptural carving at the top and understated gilded borders below creates a balanced focal point suited to traditional and eclectic room schemes.

Louis XV style mirrors are defined by Rococo influences, including sweeping curved frames, asymmetrical rocaille carved crestings, floral motifs, and organic leaf scrolls that originated in 18th-century France.

These mirrors were traditionally constructed from hand-carved timber coated in gesso, overlaid with water-gilded gold leaf over clay bole, and fitted with hand-blown mercury glass plates.

Authentic mercury glass displays distinct visual characteristics such as subtle dark speckling, gentle foxing on the silvering, slight surface shimmering, and minor irregularities within the glass pane.

Positioning a giltwood mirror above a contemporary fireplace mantelpiece or minimalist console table creates a focal point that bridges historic detail with modern interior lines.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a soft dry brush to avoid lifting delicate gold leaf, and clean the mercury glass pane using a lightly dampened cloth without contacting the gesso edge.
