A pair of side chairs in the Anglo-Indian style, dating to 1880, stands ready to bring exotic character to an interior. The frames consist of padauk wood with a dark brown finish and show extensive carved detail with scrolling leaves, flowers, and acanthus leaves on the cabriole legs and aprons, alongside pierced foliate backs. The seats are upholstered in pink silk with a striped and patterned central panel trimmed with brass-headed studs, complemented by curved feet and sturdy frames with no breakages. Each chair measures 89 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 45 cm deep, with a seat height of 45 cm. These chairs function well as seating in a living room, hallway, or bedroom, adding distinct visual interest to domestic spaces today. The vibrant upholstery and detailed woodwork allow them to complement both traditional and eclectic decorative schemes. The solid construction ensures practical everyday use while maintaining the distinct aesthetic of late-nineteenth-century craftsmanship.

Anglo-Indian furniture refers to items produced in India during British colonial rule from the late 18th to the 19th century. These pieces merge traditional European structural forms, such as Victorian or Regency silhouettes, with native Indian decorative carving and construction techniques.

Craftsmen predominantly used dense, native tropical hardwoods that could withstand detailed hand-carving without splitting. Common timbers included padauk, teak, shisham, and rosewood, often paired with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery.

Authentic pieces display exceptionally dense, heavy timber such as padauk or rosewood, combined with deeply undercut, openwork floral or foliate carving. Look for signs of hand-planing, historic construction techniques, and regional Indian motifs integrated into European furniture forms.

Carved accent chairs function well as statement pieces in hallways, drawing rooms, or bedrooms. Pairing ornate openwork timber against neutral walls or minimalist contemporary backdrop allows the detailed woodwork and vibrant upholstery to act as a focal point.

Padauk furniture should be kept away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent joint movement or cracking. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and periodic application of a high-quality beeswax polish will preserve the timbers natural patina.
